For most poker players that are involved in Texas Hold ‘em and other variations of the Hold ‘em game, being dealt a pair of aces pre-flop is one of the best things to happen to them. However, when, given the possible situations that exist out there, might it be a good idea to actually fold these and let a play pass you by?

It might be surprising but there are actually quite a few different circumstances in which you might want to fold your pocket aces at the beginning of a round rather than take the risk of going head-to-head with another player or players, both in regular play and especially in tournament settings.

In a regular play situation, for example, a case might come up where you might be holding a pair of pocket aces, while four or five of your opponents are remaining in play to see the flop. If one or more of these has been raising steadily and being called, you can generally assume that either he or she is holding a good hand or one of your other opponents might be holding a good one as well. In many cases, one of the cards in your opponents’ hands may be one of your other aces you will be looking for later on in the flop, river or turn. If this is the case, you may want to face the situation and consider folding your cards and sitting out the round. At best, a pair of pocket aces has a 70% chance of pulling through and making a winning hand out of a round, while at worst, the ratio can drop to nearly 50%. With pocket aces, the only other cards that you could possibly get to improve your hand would be another ace.

With this many opponents still in the game, chances are quite high that one or more of those aces that you need will be in one of your opponents’ hands. A suited jack and ten might even be there, which could give another player a chance at a straight flush that could easily take down most other hands out there. Be wary of this and consider carefully before putting your hard-earned chips on the line, as this is generally a good time to fold, regardless of what hand you may have.

Another good time to fold a pair of pocket aces is if you are in a tournament running towards the end and are low on chips when a similar situation occurs. If you need to be in the top three in order to realize any return on your money, two or more of your competitors are going all-in and up to five people are still in the game, it would generally be a good idea to simply fold and sit out the round – chances are that someone will take the whole pot, knock out two people entirely, and leave you sitting in at least the third seat to guarantee a return on your money, as well as a chance at winning, if you’re lucky.

Consider this carefully before getting involved in the game the next time you are dealt a pair of pocket aces, as sometimes they can work against you just as easily as they can work for you.
